Flag Day 2019

You probably have heard of “Flag Day”, which in the United States is celebrated (erm, perhaps just recognized) on June 14 each year, the anniversary of the adoption of the US flag back in 1777. The fact that we have a day to recognize and reflect on our national banner is a reminder of the symbolic importance flags can play in our countries and communities

On this Flag Day 2019, we at Flag For Portland would like to reach out to to our community and ask you to join us in the effort to adopt a new and great flag for our beloved city. We are looking for people interested in forming our executive committee. You can learn more about our mission here, or background on rationale for changing the current flag here.

Obviously the executive committee will be responsible for shaping and defining the effort, but currently envision:

  • A citizen led process that includes ample opportunities for any community member to contribute ideas or concepts.

  • Minimizing the use of tax-dollars in the process by teaming with key civic, charitable, and business organizations.

  • Lines of communication with key members of city government and public officials so they are kept aware of the initiative and feel invested in the outcome.

  • Ultimately the goal is for the city to adopt a new, beautiful, well designed flag that the community will embrace and celebrate.

If you would like to join us, or simply want more information without making a formal committment, you can send an email to flagforportland@gmail.com or use our contact form.
