Reach Out to City Council

The intent of Flag For Portland is to develop a plan for an inclusive, city-wide design process that will result in a new flag, and to present that plan to the City Council. We want to facilitate, but not dictate the design of the new flag. We aren’t ready for this discussion quite yet, but if you would like to help “plant the seed” in the minds of the councilors, feel free to reach out to them. If you need some talking points, below are a few suggestions to help craft your polite and constructive communication:

  • A great flag is a source of civic pride

  • Current flag does not reflect the creativity and energy of our city

  • The design process can be a good opportunity for Portland’s citizens to engage with their city and its governent

  • Flag For Portland is willing to organize the redesign process so the burden does not fall on city staff or council (though we certainly want their input and involvement). A link to or mention of our site, www.flagforportland.me would be much appreciated.

  • We realize this isn’t the most pressing issue the Council will consider, but there is value to creative and artistic efforts that can draw the city together

Here are some useful links to the Portland City Council and Mayor, here is their contact information, and if you need to determine what district you live in, here is a district map.
